National Board of Review Makes Its Top Selections
The National Board of Review made its annual picks for the year's top films in a myriad of categories, and unsurprisingly, Kenneth Lonergan's Manchester by the Sea was named the Best Film of 2016. The film has managed to dominate the awards conversation since premiering at Sundance in January, and is currently the dramatic frontrunner for the Academy Awards in the new year. Casey Affleck also scored a Best Actor win from the NBR for his performance as Lee Chandler, and Lonergan also received a single prize for Best Screenplay. Newcomer Lucas Hedges was also rewarded for his work as Affleck's character's nephew, with a Breakthrough Performance (Male) award.
Other major films recognized by the NBR include Moonlight, which honored Barry Jenkins for Best Director and Naomie Harris for Best Supporting Actress, Arrival which picked up Best Actress for Amy Adams, Hell or High Water which selected Jeff Bridges for Best Supporting Actor, and Silence which, while not having been released commercially yet, awarded Best Adapted Screenplay to Martin Scorsese and Jay Cocks.
